Septic failures are gradual until they are not. A failed pump or a broken baffle is a manageable repair. A ruined drain field is a different number entirely.

Diagnose, do not guess
Backups have several possible causes: a full tank, a clogged effluent filter, a failed pump, a collapsed line, or a saturated drain field. They cost very different amounts to fix.

Fix what is broken
Pumps, floats, baffles, filters, lids, and risers are component repairs. Many are same-day.

Assess the field honestly
If the drain field is the problem, no pump-out fixes it. EPA attributes failures primarily to poor original design and to neglected maintenance letting solids migrate into the field.

Permit work when required
Repairs and modifications go through the county health department. ADPH publishes repair permit forms and has a protocol for verifying repairs are completed properly.

- My septic is backing up. What do I do right now?
- Reduce water use immediately. Every gallon down a drain has to go somewhere and right now it is coming back. Then get someone out to diagnose before you pay for a fix that does not address the cause.
- Is a pump-out going to fix my drain field?
- No. Pumping empties the tank. If effluent is surfacing because the field is saturated or clogged, pumping buys days, not a repair.
- Do repairs need a permit in Alabama?
