Perc Test Cost in Alabama: What It Actually Costs and Who Can Do It

Reported perc test costs run about $200 to $1,500 when the test holes are hand dug, and $500 to $3,000 or more when an excavator is required. In Alabama the more useful question is different, because state rules mostly rely on a soil evaluation rather than a percolation test.

A perc test is what most people call it. It is not usually what Alabama requires.

Alabama's onsite sewage rules are built around evaluating the soil itself rather than timing how fast water drains out of a hole. That changes who you hire, what you get, and what it costs. This page covers the reported price ranges, the Alabama-specific requirement underneath them, and the second fee that catches people out.

In Alabama, it is usually not a percolation test

This is the part almost no cost page mentions, and it changes what you are buying.

Alabama's onsite sewage rules recognize more than one way to evaluate a site, and they tie each method to a specific profession. The unified soils classification method has to be performed and certified by an engineer or a geologist. The soil morphology method has to be performed and certified by a soil classifier, or by a public health environmental supervisor currently employed by ADPH. The detailed soil mapping method has to be performed and certified by a soil classifier.

So when you ask for a perc test in Alabama, what you are generally paying for is a soil evaluation performed by a licensed professional who then certifies the result. That is a different service from someone digging a hole and timing the water, and it is why quotes vary so much.

Who is allowed to perform it

ADPH tells property owners to contact a professional engineer, a professional land surveyor, a professional geologist, or a professional soil classifier to conduct the appropriate soil testing or a percolation test.

Those four are not interchangeable, because the method decides the profession. If your site needs soil morphology or detailed soil mapping, a soil classifier has to certify it, and hiring an engineer will not satisfy that. Ask which method your site requires before you hire anyone, and ask the county health department if you are not sure.

There is also a category where the choice is made for you. A registered engineer must perform the required tests for designed systems where the soil will not percolate well, for locations where average seasonal high extended saturation is shallower than a conventional system allows, and for large systems. If your lot falls into any of those, an engineer is not the expensive option, it is the only option.

How deep the test goes, and why that drives the price

Alabama rule 420-3-1-.39 sets the testing depth for permeability at the least permeable horizon within 18 inches below the trench bottom, or at a restriction if one is present shallower than that.

That single sentence explains most of the price variation. The test has to reach the layer that actually limits drainage, and how hard that layer is to reach depends entirely on your dirt. A site where it can be hand dug sits at the bottom of the reported range. A site where an excavator has to come out sits at the top, and reported ranges for excavator work run to $3,000 or more.

The second fee nobody budgets for

There are two separate costs here and people routinely conflate them.

The first is the private professional's fee for the evaluation. That is the number the ranges above describe, and it is set by the market, not by the state.

The second is the county health department's fee for the Application for a Permit to Install an Onsite Sewage Disposal System. That one is set locally, and most Alabama county health departments do not publish it. Etowah County is a rare exception in publishing an environmental fee schedule at all, and it is worth noting that Etowah's schedule is being updated with revised fees taking effect September 1, 2026. If you are budgeting for a permit in Etowah County this fall, ask which schedule applies to your application date.

What makes an Alabama site cost more

Geology is the variable, and in this part of the state it changes over short distances.

Around Sylacauga, shallow bedrock is a real constraint. Where soil depth is limited, a conventional gravel drain field may not be approvable at all, and the evaluation may point toward an alternative system instead. That is a finding, not a failure, but it means the evaluation is doing more work.

On low ground near the Coosa River, through Childersburg and down around Gadsden, high groundwater is the recurring issue. Seasonal saturation depth is one of the specific conditions that pushes a site into the engineer-required category above.

In the fast-growing ring outside Huntsville, the common case is different again: raw land that has never had a system, where the evaluation is the binding step that decides whether the lot supports a conventional system at all.

If the lot will not perc

ADPH is direct about this. Soils that are very shallow, drain too slowly, or are too wet, and lots that are simply too small, may not be suitable for a conventional septic tank system.

That is not automatically the end of the project. It moves you into designed-system territory, where a registered engineer performs the tests and the system is engineered around the site's limits. It costs more. It is also the reason the evaluation is worth doing before you buy land rather than after, when the answer still changes what you are willing to pay for the parcel.
